Marquess of Dufferin and Ava
If you were a member of the Protestant Ascendancy, you could build vast land holdings in Ireland from the 1600s onward and construct stately homes such as nearby Clandeboye House. The family that owned the estate consisted of a succession of lords, barons, and marquesses, one of who built Helen's Tower in honor of his mother (Tennyson wrote a poem of the same name about that tower, see below).
I tried to add photos of the house and tower from wikipedia, however my linking function isn't working. All of the above was meant as prelude to add the photo below, which I took on a walk with Maysie. There is a lane from the estate down to the train station at Helen's Bay, where David catches the train every day. Maysie and I were walking the lane and enjoyed a bridge every so often that displayed prominently the Dufferin coat of arms.
Helen's Tower, here I stand,
Dominant over sea and land.
Son’s love built me, and I hold
Mother’s love in letter’d gold.
Love is in and out of time,
I am mortal stone and lime.
Would my granite girth were strong
As either love, to last as long
I should wear my crown entire
To and thro’ the Doomsday fire,
And be found of angel eyes
In earth’s recurring Paradise.
