Golf subcategories

Golf used to be just the Tuesday competitions, which count for handicap reasons. Then there was in addition the occasional charity fundraiser and Lady Captain's Day (also a fundraiser). Then inter-club competitions – seeking to reach the province final or the all Irelands – and intra-club competitions (for instance the McKee Cup, which I've won twice). Then there are the golf societies, letting you play different courses for buttons. And when offered away days with friends, of course you say yes. All of which is to rationalise how golf has taken over my life.

Tuesday 11 August was the weekly competition, Wednesday and Thursday were away days for fun – Roe Park Golf Club in Limavady with Anne and Patricia.

Then Friday the 14th was a charity round, raising more than £3,000 for Marie Curie hospice for cancer patients. Monday the 17th was the Summer Friendly League hosted at Shandon – lots of work for me as captain with six Shandon players and 21 visitors, with tea, coffee, and scones to start. The next day was the weekly competition; I was at the club Wednesday to help with gardening; then the Thursday was a competition sponsored by one of our friends, who owns a business called Excel Glass. I played with Patricia and Claire Browning. We didn't win anything but we had a lot of fun.

Friday was mainly house work with more golf on Saturday, Sunday and Monday – post to follow.
