Making the grade

The big news in the local paper is about the high school football stadium. A booster club talked the school board into a $1.1 million renovation of the stadium. The booster club would raise $600,000.
You know where this is going, right? The cost has soared past $2 million, with only half the bleachers done, and the booster club has only come up with $200,000. The school board has spent much of the past two years on this issue, dealing with who approved the change orders and how to pay for them.
Next time you read about American students lagging their global counterparts, think about a school board spending its time on bleacher renovations. I know of no other country that invests a significant amount of school funds in sports, cheerleading squads, marching bands, travel around the country to regional/state/national championships, etc.
The median house value in Parkersburg is $80,000. So making up those extra funds will not be easy.
