Whip it!

One of the great things about life is how it can serve up the most exquisite joys in totally unexpected ways. The joy of the experience is compounded by the way it rounds a corner and whacks you up side the head. In a good way.

This morning I was running on the treadmill while plugged into the machine's video screen. I tried the '80s & '90s station and forwarded through BeeGees (80s?) and Olivia Newton John (80s?) and Bryan Adams (whatever). Then I got to Devo singing "Whip it." The cadence was dead on with my running pace. I don't know why this brings me such unadulterated joy, but it does. The same thing has happened before with John Legend and the Beastie Boys.

Kris Kross came on next singing "Jump Jump" ("cause inside-out its wiggida wiggida wiggida wack"). I kept increasing my pace to try to get with the beat but I couldn't. The video was awesome, though.

When I was in my 20s and 30s and MTV was hot, I was too cheap and/or poor to pay for cable. So I've never seen most music videos. That adds to my treadmill happiness. I was also feeling a little blissed out that I was running. I've had to take two weeks off due to intense hip pain. Today was my first day back on the treadmill and I did fine.

If a fitness instructor ever tells you to get into plank position and then jump your feet in and out (like doing jumping jacks with your body at a 30-degree angle)--don't do it!!
