A Juxtaposition

I went to city hall today for the launch of a guide for refugees and asylum seekers. I was invited because I edited the guide at one stage. It was great to see Justin Kouame, whose brainchild it was, be thanked and celebrated by so many people. Like many of the refugees and asylum seekers, he is on shaky ground. His asylum application was denied, even though he faces prison or worse should he return to the Ivory Coast. So he could be “lifted” at any time and returned to his native country.

This photo captures the top of a very tall tree. It was odd to be in the seat of power at an event attended by people who have no power. City hall looked festive and lovely. The refugees and asylum seekers live in the absolute worst housing in Belfast--and many are homeless. It was a bit jarring.
