Dunes
Saturday was music in Letterkenny, a walk on Rathmullan Beach, and a drive around Fanad Peninsula. Sunday was Fanad beach and lighthouse and a cycle along Glen Lough followed by a fantastic dinner in the town of Glen. Then a concert in Letterkenny, which I believe I was too knackered to enjoy. Yesterday we retraced our steps through gorgeous highland farms from Milford (where we were staying) to Dunfanaghy, where we walked through high dunes to get to Tramore beach.
Here’s me pretending to hit a golf ball out of a sand trap:
Here’s a Cinnabar moth on a wild orchid:
Sand dune ecology is really interesting. Lovely wildflowers--heather, ragweed, and some lovely blue flower.
The beach in the distance:
Donegal doesn’t provide easy access to many beaches, so you really have to want to go there. You aren’t likely to see more than a few people. And no litter. I conjectured that, if this were America, the dunes would have been home to an ATV park. Unless there were nearby mansions. In which case the beach would have been private. Here it’s open to anyone willing to walk through dunes for 15 or 20 minutes.
