Time to Read
On Tuesdays I spend an hour with two nine-year-olds at Orangefield Primary. This is my second year in this program, where students read aloud to us adults, who help with difficult words.
I enjoyed the kids I had last year, this year not so much. When I go to pick up Lilly, the teacher commiserates with me because Lilly is a bit difficult. I think some of the adults have better skills than I do at making reading fun--making a game out of it, or engaging kids in ways I’m not very good at.
I’ve decided that next year I might move from one extreme to the other--working with isolated older adults. I think I’m better with that age group. I was a buddy to a woman named Katie in Kansas City and we had a whale of a time together. There is a lot of emphasis on the number of elderly people who don’t have regular contacts, so I might explore that volunteer role.
In the meantime, I’m counting the weeks left until Time to Read is over--two or there more.
