Time management
I’ve recently applied for two jobs, both of them full time, both in Belfast. I don’t like that, after nearly four years living here, I have no professional network and am cut off from economic and political life in Northern Ireland. The part-time gig I have is not something I see as sustainable over the long term--the organisation is totally disorganised and lacking in focus or strategy. And funding for my position may not be renewed. If I’m going to work for 10 more years, until I’m 65, I think I need a gig with a bigger organisation.
But I don’t know how I’ll handle working 5 days/week. Here are things I would include in an ideal week:
run 3X/week
swim 2X/week
swing dance 1X/week
play golf 2X/week
sing in a choir 1X/week
read a book 1X/month
cook a meal from scratch 1X/week
clean house 1X/week
visit a friend 2X/week
see a film 1X/month
I’d say the only thing I’m accomplishing right now is visiting friends, cleaning house, and swing dancing. I didn’t run or swim while I thought I was getting a cold. I haven’t played golf since I had shingles. I’ve just heard of a nearby choir I might join in January.
The bottom line is I couldn’t work full time and pursue my varied interests. I guess the good news is, when I do finally retire, I shouldn’t be bored. Unless I no longer have the physical stamina to do most of what’s on the list.
