Shawcross @ Titanic

Today I parked near the Harland and Wolff shipyard and walked to the Titanic Museum. I passed a fairground. It’s in the 50s now, so fairgrounds seem a bit out of place.

However, it is half term, so I guess you just bundle up and go on the rides. I went to see an exhibit by Neil Shawcross, who recreates book covers in a pop art style.

There were maybe 30, all of books by Belfast writers. It is amazing how such a small place has produced so many brilliant poets, playwrights, and novelists. Of course, we have many stories to tell here. Including one about a certain ship.

There were hordes of travel groups today, many sounded like they were speaking German. Again, maybe it’s a half term thing. At the back of the museum, there’s a view over the site of Titanic’s construction. It was docked between two rows of iron poles on the left. I think the right dock was Olympic, it’s sister ship.

I had a quick peak in the Titanic Hotel, formerly the architectural drawing rooms of Harland & Wolff.

You can see the museum in the background, and (just barely) a model of the Titanic.

Tonight I went to a swing dance at the Windsor Tennis Club. I think I danced OK, given that I haven’t been making it to classes. As always, it was fun to chat with Sheina, Rhoda, and some of the other swing dance crowd.
