Mournes, p3
See that line going down into the saddle and up the far mountain? That is the amazing Mourne Wall.
From Wiki: "It was built between 1904 and 1922 by the Belfast Water Commissioners to enclose the water catchment in the Mournes.
"The wall was crafted from natural granite stone using traditional dry stone walling techniques. On average the wall is about 1.5 metres (4 ft 11 in) high and 0.8 to 0.9 metres (2 ft 7 in to 2 ft 11 in) thick. It is 22 miles (35 km) long and passes over fifteen mountains."
It is a marvel. Not as well known as the Great Wall of China, but pretty damn impressive. I walked the Mourne Wall in my teens. I didn't own a pair of hiking boots so I borrowed a pair that was too small. Bye bye toe nails!
The views from the top were spectacular. Mourne Mountains on three sides and the Irish Sea.
