Minor Foursomes

Healing is progressing. Not in a straight line, but progress overall. In the weeks since the accident, 30 people have helped or offered to help, half of them golfers. I find that extraordinary. Below is my fourth bouquet, from neighbour Fiona.

On 11 Oct. I took the Glider for 30 minutes to West Belfast to see an orthopaedic doctor at the Royal. He told me the left tendon will heal with time, like the right bone. I guess time does heal all! On the way home I bought an Abba Halloween costume for an event at Shandon. And I called in at Marks and Spencers and bought a duvet set. The problem was carrying these two items on the 15-minute walk back from the Glider bus stop to my house. I made it but my arms were quite sore.

My friend Marian came over and changed the sheets and put the duvet cover on. I am sleeping a lot – 9, 10 hours a night – and I am delighted to have clean sheets and finally put a cover on a duvet I bought back when mom was here.

Close up:

I'm sleeping with both my arms elevated on pillows and I'm really enjoying the fresh linens.

Work was slow until 16 Oct. when it was a bit too fast. A rush job in time for a biodiversity conference. I had to format four case studies in Webvision, which meant far too much keyboard time for my wrist, which isn't very flexible. As a result I called in sick on Thursday and really enjoyed a down day with no screen time. I'm reading an excellent book, All the Broken Places by John Boyne for my book club.

Friday 18 Oct. I had a party for the Minor Foursomes team I played on at Shandon, organised before my accident. Our final match was exactly two months prior. Being incapacitated was brilliant because everyone pitched in. I was able to clean the house, after a fashion, and set the table. My friend Ali collected the pizzas I ordered. Fellow golfer Michelle took me shopping at Tesco to buy six bottles of wine. And the guests brought wine and salads and desserts and – bish bash bosh – it's a party.

It was a fun night and everyone enjoyed the chance to sit and chat outside of the golf club environment, which changes the character of the chat, less about golf and more about life in general.

The next day I went car shopping with Patricia, who didn't fancy going on her own. I always enjoy spending time with her. Then home to face the music.

My friends had cleared the plates from the living room and loaded the dishwasher once. So they minimised what I had to do. I'm pretty sure I ended up with more bottles of wine than I started with. Not sure how that works when we all drank plenty. But my winter wine consumption is covered. LOL
