Happy Birthday to Me!
I'm now 53.
I'm tired of writing
I want to be free.

I got up at 4:30 this morning to finish a 2,700 word paper (with dozens of footnotes) and write a 500-word version of said paper. Both due by noon. Our professor wants us to try to get the shorter piece published on a blog devoted to environmental topics. The professor isn't much for guidance so I decided my 500-word would be an editorial based on my academic paper. What I noticed was how much more fun the 500-word piece was. Clever turns of phrase, metaphors, powerful verbs--I was kickin' it. In the academic world, you are so constrained. Your work can't have much of a voice because you mainly review the literature on your topic and then draw a conclusion. Adjectives are to be avoided. Passive verbs are preferred. Everything has to be footnoted using reputable sources (not news articles or websites, but good solid academic work).

Anyway, I met the deadline around 11:30 a.m., ate the breakfast David left for me and went to bed for a half hour. In the afternoon, I went to Ross Auctions and picked up a limited edition print of my favourite building, which I bought in Ross's online auction. My mom sent me a birthday C-note and I quickly dispatched with it.

Then David and I went to dinner. Then to bed exhausted.
