Hail Cesar!

We saw this film today and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It takes place on a movie lot in the 1950s and you see parts of five films being made, one the epic Roman film of the title; another involving synchronised swimming; third with a fantastic dance number a la Gene Kelly in Anchors Aweigh; fourth a cowboy western; and fifth a salon drama.

I’d say there were a few problems with the overarching plot and as a result the film wasn’t greater than the sum of its many parts. However, the parts were very, very good. I left the theatre feeling thoroughly entertained, which was a lovely change from the way I usually feel--drained, confused, sombre. When I left Mamma Mia, I had that same sense of: Why can’t they make more movies that are fun?
