Gorges

Today we explored Mili Gorge, not far from Rethymnon. I didn't take my camera so I'm uploading a few more shots from yesterday.

There are 80 kinds of cheese produced on Crete. Which is why there are goats and sheep all over the place.

Yesterday we took a short walk up St. Anthony's gorge (photo above). We got soaked on the way out and stopped in a Taverna for a cheese plate:

Mili Gorge is about 5K long. We parked the car at the top, hiked down, stopped at another taverna for a snack, then took a cab back to our car with the Dutch tour guide. Part of getting older, I've learned, is knowing your limits. Hiking back up the gorge would have done us in for a few days.

The taverna at the bottom was run by a Ukrainian couple who didn't speak English. One of the other two diners was a New Zealander who lives in a cave in the gorge and has lived in Greece on and off for 30 years. The other guest was a young woman from Holland who spends her summers leading tourist excursions (Greece this year, Turkey last year). You meet the most interesting people when you travel.
