Gleeson Film Premier

We went into Belfast Friday night to see Calvary, a new film from the director who brought us The Guard and starring Brendan Gleeson. Calvary is darker than the Guard but has some similar tropes. It's a bit like the story of Job--a priest in Sligo deals with the blowback of all of the anger toward the Catholic chuch. As all of his parishioners express desires to kill themselves or each other and as serial tragedies unfold, his faith is tested.

There were two sections where I had to turn away and once I yelled out "No!" which I don't often do in theaters. I left the film feeling shaken, but David and I have also been talking about it ever since. There's a lot going on and we're hoping to get a chance to talk to others about it.

If you like Gleeson and if you can handle dark tragic comic fare, I highly recommend it. But there's more tragic and less comic--be forewarned.
