Dunfanaghy Day

Another perfect day. Pictures then words. This church is just outside Buncrana.

This is Marble Hill Beach in Dunfanaghy. Donegal is a series of peninsulas jutting out into the ocean. I stayed on Inishowen Peninsula but spent today two peninsulas over visiting friends.

Same angle later that day:

I took lots of photos at Marble Hill and am offering a small sample.

Did I say something about riding horses making time on a beach even better? Here are some riders on Dunfanaghy beach.

In the afternoon I walked with a friend at Ards Friary, which offers religious retreats--and spectacular views.

I'm leaning against this tree so as to not block the view, but the tree is leaning away from me, so if I look awkward it's b/c I feel awkward.

We are looking at Lough Swilly here, so if I turn 90 degrees to the right, I'd be looking toward Buncrana.

Ards Friary is in Creeslough, this is looking north to Dunfanaghy.

And one more:

So I guess you can see why residents of Northern Ireland head to Donegal for their holidays. It is absolutely beautiful.

So I had lunch today with Siobahn Biggar and her brother Richard. Their mother, who was very good to me when I was a teenager living in Derry, died a year ago. I gave Siobahn some letters her mom wrote to me as well as letters from Siobahn. I was very homesick when I left Derry and corresponded with anyone willing to write to me. After lunch, Richard and I went for a walk at Ards Friary and we compared notes on the our high school reunion, which was three years ago but seemed like yesterday. He operates a fishing business, so if anyone out there wants to go fishing on the west coast of Ireland, let me know.

Siobahn said Dunfanaghy is home to a lot of people who have figured out how to work virtually. They fall in love with the place and don't want to leave. Her husband is a camera man who travels around Ireland and Great Britain doing gigs, including Game of Thrones. Another Dunfanaghy resident writes speeches for Mary Robinson, formerly the president of Ireland. She attends a lot of human rights conferences while her husband, a geophysicist, travels to attend scientific conferences. It sounds like an interesting place in addition to being beautiful.
