Donegal, part two

So Glenveagh Castle was built in 1870-73 by a particularly nasty Ulster Scot, a Mr. Adair, who made his fortune on land speculation in the U.S. before returning and buying up vast tracts of Donegal. He evicted 44 tenant families--244 people--to improve the aesthetics of his deer hunting grounds. They either went to the poorhouse or Australia.

The property was purchased in the 1930s by the curator of the Philadelphia Art Museum, Henry McIlhenny, who donated it to Ireland in the 1980s.

Next we drove into the village of Dunfanaghy for lunch, then took the scenic route, which lead to Horn Head and more breathtaking views.
