I’ve neglected to mention the British Olympic team lately. Team GB is just amazing. The women’s hockey team beat the Dutch last night in a nail biter. They won on penalties, basically b/c they had the better goalie, Maddie Hinch. That sport is brutal--the pitch is SO large and the women never stop sprinting around for an hour. There isn’t as much standing around as in a soccer game, which--compared to American football--is itself played at a dizzying pace. The captain of the GB hockey team is married to another woman on the team. They got married after they won at the London Olympics, and the whole team attended the wedding.
Interesting fact: British Olympic medal winners don’t win bonuses while, in the U.S., £18,000 is paid to gold medallists, £11,000 to silver medallists and £7,500 to bronze medallists. Does this incentive work? The UK’s total medal count was 55% of the US haul, an impressive accomplishment given that the UK’s population is only 20% that of the US.
But I digress. David and I hiked up Divis Mountain this afternoon, getting a great view of the city.
I am a sucker for any view that has patchwork fields. Which is most views in Ireland. I will never tire of patchwork fields.
I’m going hiking and camping in the Mournes next weekend. After having a cold for two weeks and taking it easy for a few days, I’m feeling really out of shape.
