Catholic or Protestant?

I think it’s funny how--in trying to solve a problem--we often make it worse. For instance, Catholics have historically faced employment discrimination in Ulster. The solution? Ask job applicants whether they are Protestant or Catholic. The reasoning is in Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998, which "requires public authorities in carrying out their functions in Northern Ireland to have due regard to the need to promote equality of opportunity between persons of different religious belief and political opinion. Following guidance issued in July 2007 by the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland the NIHRC has decided to use “community background” information as a proxy for political opinion."

And so when I apply for a job in Northern Ireland, I have to answer a "Community background” question:

Please note that it is mandatory to provide this information

Please indicate your community background, or the one you are most likely to be seen as, by ticking the appropriate box below:

I have a Protestant community background

I have a Roman Catholic community background

I have neither a Protestant nor a Roman Catholic community background<<

So, how do I answer this? I grew up in a Catholic family. I went to a Protestant high school in Northern Ireland. I now consider myself a Unitarian Universalist, with very broad ideas about religion and theology that are not easily labeled. I attend a non-subscribing Presbyterian church. So, who am I? I also think there are a lot of people here who grew up in a one community or another but don’t want to be defined by it--and isn’t that the goal?
