Barafu -- base camp
Last night was warmer than expected so I slept well. I was also able to eat more last night and this morning. Today we climbed another steep ridge in a region called alpine desert – very barren. Up a second steep ridge to Barafu camp, from where the summit hike begins. We had a view of a nearby mountain, Mawenzi.

Karen and I were delighted to see the mess tent chairs set up outside.

We took full advantage before going to our tents to repack for summit night – i.e. get all our warmest clothes together. Below we are photo bombed by Karen's tentmate Sharon, a gifted artist.

Today's hike was only four hours. At Barafu camp, we had lunch, tried to sleep, had dinner, tried to sleep, and the ascent hike began at 11 pm. I got no sleep as we were exposed to high winds on this ridge so the tent was really noisy.

Lying in my tent, I was taking inventory. My knees were fine. My legs felt strong. I was breathing in and out through my nose trying to increase my oxygen level. I thought I was going to be OK.
I also thought about all the love and support behind me – wind beneath my wings. I wore a wool top from Ann, a wool hat made by mom, lined trousers given to me by Patricia, I had my mini me from Aelish. Lots of people willing me on, including a village of elders in Malawi saying prayers for me.
