A mere grocer

Today we met Hillary in Bangor for lunch, Hillary being the former owner of our house. We had a ladies lunch in Bangor then we went to the Royal Ulster Yacht Club, where Hillary’s a member, for a quick tour. The yacht club doesn’t serve lunch on Mondays, so we just had a quick look around at all the sailing memorabilia. I’m afraid no photos again today. I’m just not on my game, blogwise.
The club was heavily endowed by the Marquess of Dufferin, also known as Lord Clandeboye, also known as Sir Thomas Lipton. You may have heard of his tea? He had applied to the royal yacht club in England but was turned down because King George III said he was a “mere grocer.” England’s loss, Bangor’s gain. The beautiful old photos and paintings of sailing yachts reminded me of the art collection at Vanguard, my former employer. The company was named for one of Lord Horatio Nelson’s ships.
After lunch, I got out the wheelchair and pushed mom along the coastal path from Bangor through Carnalea almost to Crawfordsburn. Hillary came with us and kept mom entertained with stories of travels with her late husband. It was a beautiful day and mom got to see more of the lovely Belfast Lough coastline.
