A Day in Donegal

When I was 18, I hitched the whole way around Ireland, staying in youth hostels. One of my favorite places was County Donegal, the most northerly county in Ulster despite not being in Northern Ireland.

David and I went there yesterday and it was as gorgeous as I recalled. While the Antrim coast we toured earlier faces the Irish Sea, the Donegal coast faces the North Atlantic Ocean, which pounds away at the base of the cliffs.

We started by driving through the beautifully barren Donegal highlands with views of Mt. Errigal.

Then on to Glenveagh Castle, situated on Lough Veagh.

In this picture you can barely see the castle turret right in the middle of the shot.

The gardens include a Victorian pleasure garden, a Tuscan garden, a Swiss garden, a kitchen garden, and more.

And a poem!

More photos tomorrow... Happy Easter!
